I have solved the difficulty of gift cards and their acceptability as gifts. First, find a gift card or certificate for a place that is a particular favorite of the giftee (avoid franchised chains as much as is humanly possible - stick with the local stuff). Then, to compensate for the presence of the gift card, wrap the gift in the most excruciatingly complicated way possible.
Anyone care to guess what I got my brother...?
